The stone is vapor-coated on the back with iron oxide using the CVD procedure, which creates this unique orange.
It is a common method of gemstone coating.
The topaz is only steamed on the back, which is protected in the stonesetting anyway.
The starting material was a white topaz, the coating is durable and harmless.
